Steroids in high school sports have increased in recent years at an alarming rate. Some
surveys have shown that young athletes using steroids will often willingly jeopardize their own
health and longevity by taking illegal steroids.
High school sports are becoming more and more competitive, as
teenagers vie for scholarships to top college programs and also just for young glory. But the
dangers of steroids greatly outweigh the temporary benefits of using them.
Young amateur athletes are often influenced by professional athletes they look up to. When
high school, college, and other young athletes hear reports of professionals in sports using steroids, that
can influence aspiring, young athletes to think it is a good idea to try them.
The Mitchell Report disclosed the surprising abuse of steroids in Major League Baseball during the 1990s and early 2000s. Big names accused of taking steroids in baseball included Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, and Jose Canseco just to name a few. Since the report came out, Major League Baseball has toughened its stance on illegal steroids.
Several NFL players have also been hit with suspensions for steroids and other performance enhancement drugs in recent years.
While anabolic steroids are dangerous for anyone, it is even more dangerous for teenagers to use illegal steroids than it is for older athletes. Teenage bodies are still developing, and the risks are even much more significant and potentially catastrophic for teenagers.
